DIY Therapy

imageAll of my recent posts have focused on Lupus and staying positive, however I must admit my current Lupus flare has had me struggling to keep up the positive attitude that I preach.  Yesterday I was finally feeling a little more energetic, so I decided it was way past time for a little DIY Therapy.  Building something, or creating something fun for my home, always makes me feel better.  Unfortunately, like most busy parents, I struggle to find the time to do all the projects I have stored in my brain…….and on sheets of paper and sticky notes all over my house.

I find great joy in the ability to create something from nothing!  I love anything to do with old pallets, jute twine, leather, burlap, old bottles, and mason jars (I could continue this list forever but I’ll spare you).  I love everything antique (even if it’s junk), and I love to take something old that most would throw away and put it back into use.  My current obsession is trying to find ways to use old milk bottles for something other than flower vases.  I have quite a few glass milk bottles that my father-in-law generously gave to me, and I just love the different styles and labels on them.  Seems a bit silly to say, but I was super stoked when I recently discovered that you can still purchase milk in old timey glass bottles from our local organic store.  I got even more excited when I realized that the little plastic lids that they come with will fit most of my old milk bottles.  So I was wracking my brain yesterday for a simple project that I could do after work, when it came to me that I could use them for soap dispensers….. Here is what I did:

1.  I took the plastic lid and drilled a hole through the center the size of the soap pump.

Note:  I stole the soap pump from a generic plastic bottle that I had on hand.

2. I checked to make sure that everything fit together the way that I had envisioned.

3.  I then cut a circle of fabric that would cover the “not so pretty lid”.  A hole was cut in the center of this as well.  Sorry, I forgot to take a picture of this step.

4.  I placed the fabric over the lid, and then reinserted the pump through both.  After filling the jar with soap, and putting on my fabric covered lid I placed a rubber band around the fabric and the jar and tied with a piece of twine.  Simple and still easy enough to remove when you need to refill the bottle.

This was such an easy project that I managed to pull it off while simultaneously cooking dinner.  Despite the simplicity, it was still lots of fun to do and gave me that much-needed feeling of accomplishment.  Anyway here is another look at the finished product.  Super happy with how it turned out; I just wish I had bought dish soap that wasn’t green, Oh well, maybe next time.

I would love to hear what other great ideas you can come up with for repurposing old milk bottles!
